• Just Scratching the Surface

  Hey baby, I know it's another long night
  I know everything may not be alright.
  so I'll use a few lines to bring you cheer,
  give me your eyes and give me your ears,
  see, you've touched me in some special way,
  you've even changed how I move through the day.
  
  I get up in the morning, though later than you,
  before I open my eyes, baby you're on my mind,
  and my day begins with a smile, it's true!
  how could I not? you're a sensational find!
  
  I proceed to send you a simple line or two
  and though class rules say you can't reply,
  I simply have to say that I'm in love with you,
  wish you good morning, say you're on my mind.
  
  I put the kettle on the stove to brew some tea
  (my routine every morning, since the age of three)
  even then, I sit and wish you could sip with me.
  now wouldn't that be the most wonderful thing?
  
  I drive from place to place with the radio up,
  of course. Once again, I'm thinking of you,
  listening to country music and ballads of love,
  so I'm reminded of you by nearly every tune.
  
  sometimes I decide to write and leave a note
  to make you smile when you walk out of school
  so I write my love, heart, thoughts, and hope
  that each smudge of ink turns into a jewel.
  
  at the end of the day and later on at night,
  when you're back home, I'll call your phone,
  and we talk late, laugh lots, say goodnight,
  the sound of your voice makes feel so calm.
  
  and when I lay down to go to sleep,
  I think of you laying at my side.
  I know now that it's only you I need,
  that's why you're always on my mind.
